This project involved the development of a BIM model for a laboratory, based on technical working drawings, as well as the identification and resolution of clashes. The client is an oil and gas company.
The laboratory forms an integral part of the field infrastructure. The primary objective of creating the BIM model was to eliminate design conflicts and enable accurate material estimation.
Due to the remote location of the construction site, materials were delivered by helicopter. These logistical challenges demanded a lot of attention during the design phase to ensure the on-site assembly could proceed without issue. Any missing components would have significantly increased construction costs due to the difficulty of arranging additional deliveries.
BIM Model
The laboratory has a floor area of 800 square metres and features a dense network of engineering systems. The original 2D documentation, which served as the starting point for the project, contained numerous clashes. These were systematically identified and resolved over several iterations.
The BIM model was developed in full compliance with the client’s design standards. A Level of Development (LOD) 400 was achieved, enabling the model to accurately reflect the intended construction with a high degree of specificity.
As part of the project, a VR model of the laboratory was also created. This gave the client the opportunity to visually explore the space before installation began and to make adjustments where necessary. This proved particularly valuable for a project of such complexity, situated in a geographically remote area.
The virtual reality tools also allowed the client to assess the proposed solutions from an operational perspective before the start of construction and the final approval of the design.
The client received a comprehensive BIM model that helped avoid clashes and addressed the unique challenges of building and operating a facility in a remote, harsh northern climate.
