Spreadsheet Editor Plugin: Convenient Specification Editing in Revit via Excel

In BIM modelling, effective data management is one of the key factors for successful project delivery. This is particularly true for complex and large-scale projects, where bulk editing of element properties becomes essential. For Revit users, VirTex offers a convenient and completely free solution — the Spreadsheet Editor plugin.

What can the plugin do?

Spreadsheet Editor is a plugin for Revit that allows users to export schedules from a project to Excel, edit them externally, and then import them back into Revit, automatically updating element properties within the model. This is especially useful when dealing with large volumes of information or when performing calculations that are difficult to implement directly within Revit.

How does it work?

Selecting a Schedule

Within the plugin’s interface, you choose the desired schedule — for instance, a room schedule.

Viewing Editable Fields

The right-hand panel displays the schedule fields, showing which ones can be modified and which are protected from editing.

Exporting to Excel

The plugin exports the selected schedule to Excel format. The resulting file can be opened using standard Excel tools.

Editing

In Excel, you can make the necessary changes: bulk-edit values, use formulas, filters, autofill, and other Excel features.

Importing Back into Revit

After saving the file, you upload it back via the plugin. Changes are automatically reflected in both the schedule and the model elements.

When is this plugin especially useful?

  • When there’s a need for bulk updates to room, equipment, structural, or other object parameters.

  • When complex formulas are required, which cannot be implemented within Revit itself.

  • When data needs to be coordinated with project stakeholders who do not use Revit (such as quantity surveyors or engineers).

Spreadsheet Editor by VirTex is a simple yet powerful tool for optimising data handling in Revit projects. It saves time, improves accuracy, and allows you to interact with your model on an entirely new level. Try it out — and you’ll notice the difference right away.
